PLASTIC RECYCLING IN SPAIN

According to official data offered by Eurostat, Spain continues to be behind other European countries such as Austria, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and France, among others, in terms of recycling.

However, companies linked to recycling are booming for obvious reasons: Ecology and economy.

  • Recycling and its positive effects on Ecology

Recycling is very important for the health of the planet and its great usefulness is key in reducing waste that reaches landfills (where, for example, non-biodegradable plastics can remain up to 500 years without decomposing), the reduced need to extract raw materials (which in cases like oil, for example, are extremely scarce considering the speed with which we consume them), reducing energy consumption and is also key in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which are largely partly to blame for dangerous climate change, whose problems are already being suffered worldwide.

  • Recycling and its positive effects on the Economy

Every year more companies at a national and international level know and take advantage of the advantages of businesses related to recycling. Waste and its transformation into other new products (items that are nourished by new trends in ecodesign) are a business opportunity that currently generates thousands of euros and also thousands of jobs around the world.

Manage, separate and recycle are the “magic words” that drive profitable recycling businesses and all of them need efficient and resistant recycling machinery, like the one we guarantee at Domenech Maquinaria.

Recycling is synonymous with the future

Increasingly, recycling is synonymous with the future and awareness of caring for the environment only accelerates businesses focused on this sector.

Furthermore, studies are multiplying and recycling technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, since every year more entrepreneurs launch themselves into this sector due to its great potential. For example, a material called small is obtained from discarded tires, which once processed can be transformed into quality steel, tiles for playgrounds, fuel for cement companies, etc. Obtaining these final products from the transformation of waste is generally more economical, has less energy consumption and is infinitely more ecological than creating them from scratch from raw materials.

Regarding plastic recycling in Spain, according to estimates, 63.8% of deposited plastic containers, 82.9% of paper and cardboard containers and 83% of metal containers are recycled (data collected in 2015). and although these data are very positive compared to previous years, there is still much to do.

The autonomous communities that are most involved in recycling are Navarra, the Basque Country and the Balearic Islands, according to 2015 data.

According to an interview in the newspaper El País with the CEO of Ecoembes, Óscar Martín, after being asked about the economic potential of the Circular Economy, he declared that: “…there is a study by the Ellen McArthur Foundation that states that moving to a user-friendly economy throwing a circular would mean savings of 480,000 million euros, which is said quickly: it is between 3% and 4% of European GDP. Of those, 21,000 million would be in Spain. But it is also a social opportunity. There are 175,000 jobs linked to waste…”
